Excerpts taken from article by Marcia Bierce:
“A North Country native, Steve grew up in Keeseville, one of five children. His first full time job was working for Torrington Industries, a local contracting firm where he was a maintenance man for the concrete plant. It was in that job that he learned about the excavation business, which helped him get where he is today.
In April 1981, Steve, with the support of his wife, Denise, decided to started his own company. With $3,500 he bought a 1959 dump truck and a 1964 John Deere backhoe. He started out with small jobs; installing septic systems, building foundations, and constructing driveways for local residents.
After working on his own for three years, he hired his first employee, Doug Decker. Denise worked for a local engineering company and took care of the fledgling company's finances at night until she joined the company full-time in 1987. for the next few years, the company continued to do those small, but very important construction jobs.
In 1998, things changed, Steve explained, "CP Rail had a train derailment in Port Douglas due to heavy rain and flooding. We took on the CP Rail reconstruction project and as a result the company increased from 30 to more than 100 employees. That prompted us to start bidding on much larger projects in the immediate area.”
